Your Dog's Favorite Day Trip
If you're looking for an escape from Gilbert's suburban sprawl without a long drive, Canyon Lake is one of the best dog-friendly destinations in Arizona. Located about 45 minutes east of Gilbert via the US-60 and the scenic Apache Trail, it feels like a different world — towering canyon walls, turquoise water, and Sonoran Desert wilderness.
Best of all, dogs are welcome at the lake, on trails, and at the marina area.
Getting There
From Gilbert
- Head east on US-60 (Superstition Freeway)
- Take exit 196 for Idaho Road in Apache Junction
- Head north on Idaho Road, which becomes the Apache Trail (AZ-88)
- Continue about 15 miles on the Apache Trail to Canyon Lake
Road Conditions
The paved portion of the Apache Trail to Canyon Lake is well-maintained and suitable for any vehicle. The road beyond Canyon Lake toward Tortilla Flat becomes unpaved and narrow — you don't need to go that far for a great day trip.
Dog-Friendly Activities
Boulder Beach
The main beach area at Canyon Lake is dog-friendly (leashed). It's a small, rocky beach with access to the water.
- Dogs can wade and splash in the shallows
- The water is typically calm near shore
- Bring a long lead so your dog can explore while staying under control
- Watch for cactus and sharp rocks along the shoreline

What to Pack
For Your Dog
- Water — at least 1 liter per dog for a half-day trip. More for hikes

- Leash (required) and a long lead for beach time
- Dog boots — the rocky terrain and hot surfaces can damage paw pads
- Poop bags — non-negotiable
- Shade shelter or pop-up tent if you plan to stay at the beach
- Dog life vest if your dog will be swimming in deeper water
- Towel for drying off before the car ride home
For You
- Sunscreen and hat — there is very little shade

- Camera — the scenery is stunning
- Cash — some parking areas and services are cash-only
Safety Tips
Heat Awareness
Even in fall and spring, temperatures at Canyon Lake can be significantly warmer than forecasted for Gilbert. The canyon walls trap heat.
- Check the forecast specifically for Apache Junction/Canyon Lake, not just Gilbert
- Avoid midday visits during warmer months — go early morning or late afternoon
- Watch for heatstroke signs in your dog: excessive panting, drooling, stumbling
Wildlife
The area around Canyon Lake is home to:
- Rattlesnakes — stay on trails, keep your dog leashed, and watch where you step
- Javelinas — usually avoid humans but can be aggressive if surprised
- Scorpions — check shoes, blankets, and gear before sitting down
Water Safety
- Canyon Lake has steep drop-offs near shore in some areas
- Currents can be stronger than they appear, especially near boat channels
- Not all dogs are natural swimmers — a life vest is recommended for water play
- Blue-green algae can occasionally be present — if the water looks unusually green or scummy, keep your dog out
Best Time to Visit
- October through April — ideal temperatures for dogs and humans
- Weekday mornings — fewer crowds, easier parking, quieter trails
- Avoid summer months unless going very early — heat is dangerous for dogs
After the Adventure
Your dog will come home dusty, possibly wet, and definitely tired. A post-adventure routine:
- Check for cactus spines, burrs, and ticks — full body inspection
- Rinse paws and check for cuts or abrasions
- Wipe down or rinse their coat to remove dust and lake water
- Offer plenty of water and let them rest
- Schedule a grooming appointment if they got into anything particularly messy
