Halloween Safety Tips for Dogs

Halloween Safety Tips for Dogs

Halloween is one of the most fun nights of the year — costumes, candy, and community! But while it’s a blast for humans, it can be a little too spooky for our four-legged friends.

At Gordie’s Grooming in Gilbert, we care about keeping your dogs safe and comfortable during every season, and Halloween brings a few special challenges. From tempting treats to loud doorbells and glowing decorations, here are some ways to make sure your pup has a happy and safe Halloween.

1. Keep Candy Out of Paw’s Reach

It’s no secret that dogs love sweets — but most Halloween candy is dangerous for them. Chocolate, xylitol (a sugar substitute found in sugar-free candy and gum), and even raisins can be toxic.

Keep all candy bowls, treat bags, and wrappers well out of reach. Remind kids and guests that candy is for humans only. If your dog manages to sneak a snack, call your vet or an emergency animal clinic right away.

2. Be Cautious with Costumes

Dressing up your dog can be adorable — and at Gordie’s, we love seeing pups in costume. But comfort and safety should come first.

Before putting your dog in a costume, check that:

  • It’s not too tight or restrictive.
  • They can move, breathe, and see clearly.
  • There are no small parts they could chew or swallow.

If your dog shows signs of stress, panting, or trying to remove the outfit, skip the costume and opt for a festive bandana or bow tie instead.

3. Watch the Door — and the Doorbell

Trick-or-treating can be overwhelming for dogs. The constant knocking, doorbell ringing, and parade of strangers in masks can cause anxiety or even fear-based reactions.

If your dog gets nervous around noise or strangers:

  • Set up a quiet space in another room with their bed and favorite toy.
  • Turn on a white-noise machine or TV to muffle sounds.
  • Keep them away from the front door to prevent dashes outside.

Even the calmest dogs can get startled, so make sure their ID tags and microchip info are up-to-date — just in case they sneak out.

4. Decorate Safely

Pumpkins, candles, fog machines, and spooky décor set the mood — but they can also pose risks.

  • Keep candles and jack-o-lanterns out of reach to prevent burns or fires.
  • Unplug cords when you’re not home — curious pups may chew on them.
  • Watch for decorations that contain small or dangling parts that could be swallowed.

Battery-powered LED candles are a great pet-safe alternative for your pumpkin glow.

5. Avoid Outdoor Hazards

If you’re taking your dog out for a neighborhood walk or photo op:

  • Go before dark, or use a reflective leash, collar, or LED harness for visibility.
  • Keep your dog on a short leash around costumed children or noisy decorations.
  • Stay alert for dropped candy or wrappers along the sidewalk.

Even friendly dogs can get spooked by flashing lights or loud noises on Halloween night, so it’s best to keep walks short and calm.

6. Treats They Can Enjoy

Want your pup to join in the fun? Make or buy dog-friendly Halloween treats made with safe ingredients like pumpkin or peanut butter. Many local pet stores — and even our team at Gordie’s Grooming — carry seasonal goodies that are healthy and festive.

Or simply reward them with their favorite chew or cookie while the trick-or-treaters come by. A happy distraction goes a long way.

7. Plan a Post-Halloween Grooming Visit

After the holiday fun, a grooming session is the perfect way to reset. Costumes, outdoor walks, and party guests can all leave behind dirt, mats, or odors. A bath and tidy at Gordie’s Grooming helps your pup feel fresh and calm again.

Plus, it’s a great time to schedule a nail trim before the busy holiday season begins.
